Abstract
Lentinus tuberregium an edible mushroom, collected from dead logs of rubber trees and mango trees of Keeriparai forest, Kanniyakumari District of Western Ghats of Tamil Nadu, India. Kaani tribes lives in the forest, attributes many medicinal properties to this fungus. However, there are no studies were carried out on this indigenous L. tuberregium. From the fruit bodies harvested two medically important steroids have been isolated and identified as antimicrobial compounds which exhibited considerable zone of inhibition against all the test organisms. The compounds also exhibited a moderate anticancer activity in four human cancer cell lines including ovarian (SK-OV-3), breast (MCF-7) and colorectal carcinoma (HCT-116) cell lines. Furthermore, these compounds were characterized and named as LT-1 and LT-2, based on the spectroscopic data derived by employing 1H NMR, 13C NMR, DEPT, APT and IR. Presence of these compounds in this indigenous isolate is reported for the first time and applied for patent rights.
