Abstract
The national policy on environmental conservation and sustainable use of biodiversity is an integral part of the national policy on environment. The policy was first developed in 1989 following the promulgation of the Federal Environmental Protection Agency (FEPA) decree no 58 of 1988 and revised in 1999. The decree provides the legal framework for the implementation of the policies on environmental protection, natural resources conservation and sustainable development. Biodiversity is one aspect that plays a global role in food and environmental upkeep. Human interference and high population are factors leading to its loss. Thus, this deters agriculture practice especially in moisture deficient areas and deforestations. Since the mid-20th century Nigeria has witnessed an increase in environmental degradation. This has continuously led to the extinction of plant and animal species there by impairing global or regional migration of even animals. In Nigeria, problem bound on which tiers of government are responsible for safeguarding land and Biodiversity. This paper focuses on issues arising from environmental legislature and the way forward.
