Abstract
Power transformer is the most expensive equipment in electrical network; and the mineral oil (transformer oil) used as coolant in it. Transformer oil is subjected to degradation because of ageing, high temperature and chemical reactions such as oxidation and become disposable. Such waste transformer oil possesses a considerable heating value and properties similar to diesel fuel. In this study the performance and emission characteristics of a single cylinder, four stroke, air cooled, diesel engine developing power of 4.4 kW at 1500 rpm fueled with UTO has been investigated. The used transformer oil (UTO) and four of its diesel blends by varying the UTO concentration from 20% to 80%, at a regular interval of 20% by volume basis was used as fuels. Engine performance and emissions were measured and compared to that of diesel fuel. From the analysis the brake thermal efficiency and nitric oxide (NO) emissions of UTO and its blends increases while smoke decreases compared to that of diesel
